KIA ORA TEAM BAYVIEW

The sunny weather is here, long may it last. This does make it more important for your child to wear a sunhat at school and to apply sunscreen. We do have hats for sale in the office for $15 and the new hat available from janbells at $17. The new hat has a broader rim and affords more protection to ears, faces and the neck. Each habitat has a bottle of sunscreen that the children can use to be sun smart. You are welcome to send your own sunscreen with your child that they can use throughout the day.

It is also important that your child drinks lots of water during these hot days. Having their own drink bottle means they do not have to interrupt their learning to go outside to access the water fountains, but we do have these around the school so no child has to go without water. We have also spoken with the children about taking their jumpers off before they go outside to play as many get over heated and then take their jumper off and forget to put it away. Please note all lost property can be found outside H9/Library so parents can retrieve lost items. It always helps if your child’s name is written in their clothing.

UNIFORM

It is lovely to see our new learners wearing the new uniform with pride. It looks great! The board brimmed hats are keeping the children safe and compliment the uniform well.

SKATE CLUB

Lots of our learners have signed up to the skate club that comes in every Friday at first break. This initiative was organised by Hayden James due to his love of skate boarding. This group is full but hopefully is something we may be able to continue in 2023.

KAPA HAKA

We are so incredibly lucky to have our kapa haka tutors who come in each Friday to give our learners an opportunity to learn something new. Whaea Carol and Whaea Aarani have been taking our kapa haka for many years now and take huge pride in what they can achieve with the children. Last week the kapa haka performed for the Stroke Club, a group of adults who have suffered a stroke and come together regularly to support each other. Some of these people are unable to speak but were delighted to hum along with the group and dance to their waiata! A big thank you to Shelley Matuku for coordinating this visit.

UPCOMING UNION MEETINGS

Over the next few weeks some of our teachers that are union members will be attending paid union meetings. There will be minimal disruption to classes as we have spread out when our teachers will attend these meetings. Your child’s class may be split for a morning or an afternoon either on the 16th or the 24th November.

RELIEVERS

Like every other school we are affected by illness of our staff. When a staff member is sick and is unable to come to work we do our best to provide a reliever in their class. There are times though when our relievers get sick or go on holiday and we are unable to provide cover. In this instance your child will be sent to another class for the day and will join into their programme for the day.

If you know of someone who is looking for relieving work and would like to put their name on our relievers list please get them to send their CV to [email protected].

LEAVERS AND NEW ENROLMENTS

We are currently getting ourselves organised for the 2023 school year. This means sorting classes, writing reports and ensuring we are fully staffed for the year.

If you have a child due to enrol at Bayview School in 2023 and have not yet filled out an intention to enrol form (for those in our school zone) then could you please do one of these to help us ensure we have the right staffing in place for the year. This form can be found on our website under enrolments.

Also if you are moving house and your child will be attending a different school next year could you please email the office and let us know as this will help us with sorting classes for 2023.

Did you know that we currently have 450 learners at Bayview School and that we are quite multicultural in our make up: NZ European 46%, Chinese 10%, NZ Maori 9%, Filipino 6%, Korean 4%, African 4%, European 3%, Indian 2%, Middle Eastern 2%, Tongan 2%, Latin American 2%, Samoan 2%, and representation from other ethnicities such as Sri Lankan, Vietnamese, Dutch, German, Cook Island Maori, Cambodian, Niuean, and British.

BUIDLING PROJECTS

A huge thank you for your understanding in having to navigate fences and blocked off access around the school. Our refurbishment of block 1 is on track and should be finished by the end of January 2023 so classes can move back in ready for the start of the school year. From 7th December the Habitat 11 toilet block will be blocked off so this can be refurbished as well. By taking away access for just 9 school days we can ensure we have all the work completed by the start of 2023. This toilet block and the habitat 2 block are the original toilets from 1979! I think they are due an upgrade!

The COLA work is due to recommence on Thursday 10th November. During this installation time the court will have to be fenced off to allow the construction workers free and safe access. All work should be completed by the 9th December as long as there are no weather delays or anything else! We know this is a lot all at once but we are very fortunate that we have large grounds with multiple areas the children can enjoy during break times.

OPEN DAY

On the 25th November we will be holding an open day where parents and caregivers are invited to come in and allow their child to share all of their successes for the year. You are welcome to come at any time between 8.30am and 3pm. Often parents will bring a picnic lunch along so after their sharing time they have kai together with their children. Just a reminder that our breaks times are 10.45am – 11.15am with eating time 11.15am – 11.25am; and second break is 1pm – 1.30pm with eating time from 1.30-1.40pm.

We hope you can join your child for this special celebration of learning.

Please Note: End of year reports will come home on Friday 16th December.

We look forward to developing our connections with you over this year and to give every child at Bayview the best learning opportunities. We are stronger when we work together.
