KIA ORA TEAM BAYVIEW

Welcome back to term 3! We are so happy to see the children return happy and refreshed. The weather was a bit off during the holiday break but the good news is the dams are full and summer is on the way. Fingers crossed we don’t get the oppressive heat the northern hemisphere is enduring currently although some warmer weather will be welcome!

COVID DISRUPTIONS

This term we were really hoping we could reengage with some of our previous events such as whole school assemblies, perhaps a school disco, etc. We were advised by the Ministry of Education during the term break to take a more cautious approach in light of the recent covid wave. Last week we had 6 students and 2 staff members who were covid positive. This was not as high as we had anticipated but we are keeping our cautious approach for the next few weeks and once we have a more comprehensive idea of how covid is affecting our community and school we may ease up on our protections. The safety of your child and our staff will always come first. Thank you for your flexibility and understanding as we navigate these difficult times together.

One area that is affecting us is the ability to get quality relievers in when a staff member is sick. Our senior leadership team work hard to ensure when a staff member is sick that their class can be covered. Unfortunately there is high demand for relievers currently and sometimes these relievers get sick themselves. We will continue to try to ensure continuity in classes but please be aware on the odd occasion we may have to split classes which means your child may need to work in a different class for a day.

MID YEAR REPORTS

Tomorrow you will receive your child’s mid-year report. This report is a summary of the progress and achievement your child has made in the last 6 months. We have been very impressed with the accelerated progress many learners have made to get them back where they should be achieving.  We know the past two years have been very difficult and the continual disruption to learning has affected achievement. Our staff have been and continue to work hard to ensure evey child is making progress.

On Wednesday 10th August we are holding our feedback meetings where we will be able to celebrate your child’s learning successes from the past 6 months and share their next steps. We do hope you can join us for these meetings. Your child’s class teacher will make this appointment with you.

Just a reminder that we are closing school at 1pm on Wednesday 10th so that we can meet with as many parents as possible.

The Bayview Community Centre are running an after school care session from 1pm on this day. If you would like to take advantage of this please contact them directly on (09) 4430231.

School will close at 1pm on Wednesday 10th August.

I thought I would share some of the best student voice comments with you:

  • Sometimes my teachers are my favourite thing about school.
  • I love all of it (school), it’s making me brainy.
  • I want to get better at science because I want to make potions when I’m older.

STAFF CHANGES

At the end of last term our fabulous release teacher Mrs Kirsten Stuckey resigned to pursue other interests. Sadly Kirsten contracted covid in the last week so we were unable to properly farewell her (covid has a lot to answer for!). For the rest of this year this position has been shared amongst some of our fabulous part time staff such as Toni Hoy, Michelle, Hayden and Jude Mahoney. We wish Kirsten every success as she pursues her personal interests.

Our lovely Ms Kaye Bond has also taken extended leave due to illness. Kaye has been working in H17 and H5H. We have Ms Elle McGibbon taking over this role in H17 and Mrs Michelle Hayden working with H5H. We wish Kaye an abundance of wellness and healing energy in the hope she can return again soon.
