Kia ora Team Bayview

We are currently in our 7th week of term 1 with 4 weeks left of this term. This is the longest time we have attended school in one block since term 2 2021, and two years since the first disruption to school attendance. Our learners are starting to show their tiredness and this continual hot weather (as nice as it is) is taking it’s toll.

We know the current covid situation keeps changing and this brings with it a heightened range of anxieties and some uncertainty. I would like to reassure you that we are doing all we can to mitigate the risks of your child contracting covid at school. We are hoping once the peak is over in Auckland that things will settle, but we can’t say this will happen for certain. We are so grateful to all of you for keeping your child home when they are unwell. This has helped keep the infection rate low. We do currently have only 70% attendance at school but the majority of students not attending are those who are household contacts or those who are worried about attending school.

Our hope is that in term 2 we can move to a more normalised school day. You may have seen on Seesaw that sports are proceeding with the intention that all competitions will be able to go ahead uninterrupted. Hopefully we can start going on some school trips, especially those where we can explore our local environment.

At this stage any parents that wish to coach or manage a sports team must have a valid vaccine pass and have a current police check as per the requirements of the Vulnerable Children’s Act. For any school trips, adult helpers must have a valid vaccine pass. If requirements change around this we will let you know.

BAYVIEW SCHOOL LOGO

As you know in each newsletter I will share with you some of the meaning behind our new logo.

The History our logo is based upon the following:

The North Shore’s traditional name is ‘Te Whenua roa o Kahu” (the extensive lands of Kahu). The name belongs to Ngati kahu, who decend from Kahu, a grandchild of Maki. maki had a number of sons who were each given lands across the region. Tawhia (Te kawerau a Maki) was a younger son who occupied Hikurangi, while his older brother Maeaeariki held the lands from Devonport, Glenfield, Wairau all the way up to Orewa. Kahu was the child of Maeaeariki. Tawhia married Marukiterangi, the daughter of Kahu ( his grandneice). Hence Kawerau link to the North Shore via Tawhia through Maki, Maeaeariki, and Kahu as well as through marriage to Marukiterangi. They were all Kawerau. Nga Puhi pushed everyone out of Tamaki in the early 1800’s, and what was left of Ngati Kahu/Kawerau came back to their land about a decade later and stayed until the early 1900’s.

FEEDBACK MEETINGS:

We have spent this term getting to know your child as a learner and have been conducting assessments to determine their learning needs. We would like to share this information with you at feedback meeting to be held on  Tuesday 12th April. To be able to do this we need to close school a bit earlier. We will be finishing at 12.30pm so that we can meet with as many of you as possible. Your child’s class teacher will make contact with you to arrange a time to meet in the next couple of weeks but we wanted to signal the early closing with you.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTIONS

We are due to hold our triennial Board elections this year. Due to the significant disruption caused by covid these have been postponed until September. Our Board play a crucial role in governing the school ensuring it is well resourced, has strong governance policies and works closely with the school leadership to provide good educational outcomes for our learners. If you are interested in finding out more about the Board or have an interest in joining the Bayview School Board you are very welcome to attend our meetings. These are currently held virtually via zoom. Our next meeting is next Thursday 24th March at 6pm. If you are interested in attending please email me ([email protected]) and I will send you the link. Please note as this is a formal meeting, guests do not have speaking rights nor voting rights unless the Presiding Member (Chairperson) allows this.
