Kia ora Team Bayview

Welcome back to school! What a wonderful start to the new school year. Lots of happy children and happier parents! My favourite part has been listening to the laughter of the children as they reconnect with old friends and make new friendships.

I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all of our parents for being so supportive with a disrupted start to the year, for doing the kiss and drop at the gate and for ensuring your child knows where to meet you at the end of the day. We know this has been hard particularly for our new families joining Team Bayview. We have had 41 new learners join our whanau so far this year and each of them has made Bayview a better school by bringing their individuality and sparkle!

I would also like to thank everyone who came and met with their child’s class teacher for a whanau map meeting. These meetings are invaluable to us as they help us understand your child better so we can be more proactive in meeting their needs. We hope you found them helpful as well.

NEW LOGO

Have you noticed our new logo pop up at the front of the school and in our communications with you? This logo has been in development since mid-way through 2020 with input from our Board, staff and our student leaders. Over the next few newsletters I will share the meaning behind the logo.

You will notice the new school colours: Violet, dark blue, and cyan blue. These colours will be used in all our documentation and school related things moving forwards. Each colour has a specific relevance for Bayview School. The cyan represents the water that surrounds Bayview as a suburb. The dark blue represents the night sky and the violet represents the lavender around the school and the purple tinge in Tui’s feathers. These colours give the graphic its grounding or foundation, so as to suggest trust and stability.

The font within the logo has been specifically designed for us by a graphic designer and can’t be found in fonts on the computer.

One of the things we signalled last year was a change to our uniform. We currently have a sub committee working on investigating this. Once we have made some final decisions around this we will slowly transition to the new uniform. We will keep you updated as we make these decisions.

WE C.A.R.E.

We have four very strong values that wrap around all we do at Bayview School:

Citizenship, Attitude, Responsibility, and Empathy.  Teachers will be going over these in habitats and ensuring our learners have goals around displaying these values on a continuous basis. Please feel free to use the language of We CARE at home as well. You can find out more here:

SAFETY AROUND THE SCHOOL

You may be aware that we have a group of senior students who look after our pedestrian crossing and who act as Chain Gang monitors in our lower carpark. These students are trained to help keep our younger students safe. Our school patrols were trained on Wednesday this week by Senior Constable Louise Nicholas from the NZ Police. Due to covid we were not able to train these students as per normal at the end of 2021. To start the year we have had some amazing staff and parents who have been patrolling the crossing. I would like to thank them so much for giving us their time and energy to keep our children safe whilst crossing the road.

Please note the crossing is patrolled from 8.30am – 8.55am and again at 2.45pm – 3.10pm. I can assure you that the parents that supervise the crossing are all fully vaccinated and have provided proof of vaccination. Anyone who works with our children as a volunteer or paid staff are fully vaccinated.

We chain off our lower carpark to keep our kids safe from cars driving through, especially during morning drop off and afternoon pick up. Each of our habitats has been out this week going over with all students how to use the pedestrian crossing in the lower carpark, why it is important not to run through the upper carpark and other general road safety routines. Please help us to help your child by:

  • Crossing Bayview Road at the crossing.

  • Modelling with your child how to look both ways before crossing the road at any pedestrian crossing.

  • Standing on the footpath and not on the road or in the carpark.

  • Not parking on the yellow lines (NB this can incur a fine if a traffic enforcement officer sees you do this).

  • Having your child walk their bike or scooter across the crossing.

What you teach your children when they start school is what they will continue to do whether you are with them or not. Please be great role models, your children need you!

COVID RED PHASE TWO

This week the country has moved to red phase two in the fight against Covid-19. This means that anyone who tests positive for covid must self isolate for 10 days and any close contacts must self isolate for 7 days. The Ministry of Education is working hard to keep schools open for instruction but can only do this if all of us play our part. Here are some guidelines you may find useful:

If your child tests positive for covid:

  • Please keep them in self isolation for at least 10 days or until the Ministry of Health tells you otherwise.

  • Please let the school office know as this will have implications for the other children in your child’s class. You can phone (09) 4442222  or email [email protected]

If your child is deemed a close contact:

  • Please keep your child home for at least 7 days, watch for symptoms and if they display any symptoms please get them tested. Other members of your household will not have to self-isolate.

  • Please let the school office know. You can phone (09) 4442222 or email [email protected]

If your child is in a habitat with a confirmed case:

  • We will follow a response plan based on guidance from the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health.  This involves:

    • Seeking confirmation of the positive case, and when the infectious period was.

    • If this was on a school day, we would then work through contact tracing requirements.

    • We will advise habitats that are deemed as close contacts via Seesaw, email or text message. This may be followed up with a phone call.

    • If this occurs during a school day, we will request that you come and collect your child as soon as you are able to. We would request that you arrive outside the main office (please maintain a 2m distance from other parents and wear a mask) and we will bring your child(ren) to you safely.

    • The rest of the school will be advised that we have a positive case. Parents will be advised to watch for possible symptoms and if any occur to have their child tested. The four most common symptoms are: runny nose, headache, fatigue, sore/scratchy throat.

You have all been amazing about communicating with us and we are very grateful that in Bayview we are all working as a team to keep each other and most importantly our children safe! If there is anything we can do to support you further please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Here is the link to our more comprehensive Health and Safety Plan: https://www.bayview.school.nz/wp-content/uploads/sites/100/2022/02/COVID-safety-plan.pdf

Please note this plan may change as our response to covid changes and as the guidelines to schools and kura change.

STATIONERY

Thank you to everyone who has purchased their child’s stationery for the school year. If you are yet to do this you are able to go to any stationery provider. If you want to do this online then Officemax and Warehouse Stationery can do this for you, just visit their website.

SEESAW

One of our communication tools that we use to communicate with you is the app Seesaw. Through this app your child’s class teacher will communicate important notices, share your child’s learning and you can share information in return. It is very important that you download this app. Your child’s teacher should have shared the QR code required to log in to the Bayview School site with you by now. If you still do not have this please check your emails as it may have been sent there or please feel free to contact your child’s teacher: https://www.bayview.school.nz/staff/

UPSTANDERS

An upstander sees something that isn’t right and does something about it without hurting anyone else. At Bayview we recognise the children that fulfil this kaupapa and award them an upstander wristband. These can be awarded to anyone at Bayview School and they are then welcome to wear their wrist band as part of their uniform. These cannot be purchased but rather have to be earned. If you see someone doing something extraordinary feel free to email us their name and what you saw them doing so they can be recognised for making a difference to someone else.
