Kia ora Team Bayview

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend a partnership meeting with their child’s teacher over the past couple of weeks. We hope you were able to ask any questions you had about your child’s progress and achievement. We know some of you were concerned about your child’s achievement level but hopefully the teachers were able to explain the changes in the curriculum and how that has affected achievement levels. We know we have had a drop in achievement but alongside this we have had many success stories around progress. With our structured literacy programme, our structured maths and the layers of support we have offered, most of our learners have made incredible progress over the first 6 months of school. With this focus on learning we know our learners will continue to make accelerated progress and will get to their new achievement expectation level again soon.

This year, education has been all about change, with the government making lots of changes to how and what we teach. You will have heard about the upcoming changes to secondary school qualifications. The great thing for our current learners at Bayview is that by the time they reach Year 11 our secondary colleagues will have introduced and embedded the changes.

OUT OF ZONE ENROLMENTS

Our out of zone enrolments open on Monday 1st September. If you live out of our school zone and would like to enrol your child at Bayview School to start in 2026, you will need to complete an out of zone enrollment. Forms can be found on our website or you can contact Shannon in the office and she will be able to help you. Please note if your child is already enrolled you do not need to reapply.

ATTENDANCE

Our attendance rate for this term is sitting at 91%. This is good but we are actually being badly affected by illness. Some days we have had 76 learners absent with illness, and it seems to be really difficult to shake the current illness off. Please note that a common diagnosis is strep throat which can lead to more serious illness if not treated. Many of our learners are on antibiotics as a result. Thank you for all you are doing in this cold, damp winter!

PAID UNION MEETINGS

We have a paid union meeting coming up on the 27th August. All our union members (the majority of our staff) will be attending this meeting at North Harbour Stadium. You are welcome to pick your child up early at 1pm if you would like to. The 8 staff members left will be supervising all the children not able to be picked up at 1pm, in the hall. They will be watching the 2023 School Production ‘the Night the Books Spoke’. Any children who stay at school can be picked up from the hall at 3pm. Thank you for your support as we fight for quality in our education system.

SPORTS AT BAYVIEW:

Semester 2 is underway! Congratulations to all our learners who have signed up to a team and committed their time and skills each week. A big thank you to the many parents who have stepped up to coach and manage teams. We appreciate you!

We hope you all have an enjoyable season and know you will represent Bayview with pride and respect.

WELCOME BACK

Welcome back to Shannon Corlett who has returned from maternity leave. Shannon is teaching in habitat 10.

VANDALISM

We currently have a group of teens using our school grounds to drink, take drugs (we know because they have left their supplies behind) and then cause damage around the school. They are drinking copious amounts of alcohol including spirits (they must have great jobs or rely on the bank of mum and dad). Sadly they are not able to handle their alcohol and end up vomiting. They then proceed to throw their empties onto the hall roof or smash them around the school. They are coming at all hours and throughout the week. If you see any stupid behaviour please call the police or our security company Fortress (0800 800 805) and ask them to send out a guard.

A huge thank you to Erik, our caretaker for cleaning up the mess they are leaving behind.

Whilst we want people to use our facilities we also want them to show respect and to keep our grounds safe.

Similarly we have had to take down one of our basketball hoops due to continued damage that has made it unsafe. We will work towards replacing this but they will then be kept at 10 foot high so that the vandalism stops. If you see someone hanging off the hoop please ask them to stop as this is what is causing the damage.

We do report it to the police when they cause damage and do provide the police with images from our security cameras.

BOARD ELECTIONS

Nominations have now closed for our triennial board elections. We have 14 nominations for this election. You will know that Shannon Sofaea is our returning officer and is overseeing this election. If you have any queries please reach out to Shannon as she will be happy to help.

Our election day is Wednesday 10th September with our new board taking office on Thursday 11th September.

OUR CURRENT BOARD

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our current Bayview Board: Thads Cook (Presiding Member), Brad Norman, James Cosslett, Shar Li, and Janelle Staples (staff trustee). Brad has been on our board for 3 terms now spending 5 years as our presiding member. Brad has brought with him a level headedness that has served us well to ensure we are in a fabulous place as a school. James has been a member of our board for nearing 12 years. James has been responsible for overseeing our property portfolio. He has overseen all our building projects (which have been many) and has liaised with the MOE and our property managers to ensure Bayview gets quality work done. We playfully call our COLA the Cosslett COLA! These two wonderful trustees are stepping down from the Bayview Board. We are going to miss their expertise and dedication to Bayview School but thank them for their tireless service to our children and community.
