Kia ora Team Bayview
Welcome back to term 3, our production term! It is going to be a busy term as we prepare for our whole school production at the end of term. All children are involved in this and our production nights are the 16th, 17th, and 18th September.
REPORTS
We hope you got a lot of information from your child’s mid year report. Teachers are currently inviting you to make an appointment with them to discuss anything of concern in your child’s report. Please know these meetings are not compulsory and are only for any parents who want to discuss something specific from the report.
ATTENDANCE
Our attendance rate for this term is sitting at 92%. There does seem to be a lot of illness going around right now especially with cold and flu symptoms. Please remind your children to wash their hands frequently and to cough or sneeze into their elbow. Our teachers are sanitising tables and equipment regularly to try to stop the spread of germs. The great news is we are on the downhill slope towards summer 🙂
PRODUCTION
For our production we will be sending out lots of comms through Seesaw. We have decided that we will send a special production newsletter on alternate weeks to the school newsletter. We are doing all we can to ensure you are fully informed of what is happening. Please look out for these special communications in Seesaw.
To get the kids enthused we have lots of trips happening that relate to the learning around the scene your child is involved in.
We also have a taniwha hunting game happening for learners during break time. Every day we hide 2-3 tiny taniwha around the school and the people who find them get a prize! This has given a number of children a focus for break times and created an excited buzz in the school around taniwha!
SPORTS AT BAYVIEW:
We are very proud to offer a range of sports to learners from year 0-6 at Bayview School. We have some amazing sports people who are working hard to become top of their game!
When a child signs up for a sport there are some expectations around behaviour and commitment that are very important. We expect our players to turn up to every practice and game especially if it is a team sport. If a player does not turn up it affects the rest of the team and recently we have had to default games because players just haven’t turned up. Some players start a season and then do not see it out! This affects everyone else in the team. Please note if you pull your child out of a season we do not reimburse fees as these are paid to the sporting organisation.
Parents please remember your child is playing for fun, they just want to play. If you are yelling from the sideline it puts them off their game and makes them anxious about how they are playing. Please just let them play, cheer when they do something right and cheer again when they miss a shot or goal but get back up again and carry on! Be the role model of how to be a great sports person, show how to be empathetic, show them how to react when things don’t go right. Your actions and your words matter!
BOARD ELECTIONS
This year we are holding our triennial board elections. Our election day is the 10th September. Shannon Sofaea is our returning officer overseeing this election.
We have had lots of interest from a range of parents which is great. Some people have been asking what is involved in being a board member. The board is the group of people that make the big decisions and set the overall direction of the school. Every state, state-integrated school or kura has a board.
The school board is responsible for:
- Policies
- Planning for the future
- Employment
- Complying with the law and legislation
- Managing budgets and finances
- Fulfilling its obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi
The board does not get involved in operational issues and these are not discussed in Board meetings. The Principal is responsible for the day to day running of the school.
Our current board has 2 meetings per term unless special meetings are required. Each board meeting can only be 3 hours long so it is expected that each board member has read through the documentation prior to the meeting ready for discussion. Board members who are on a sub committee will have additional meetings. There is a time commitment to be a board member.
