Kia ora Team Bayview

Happy Lunar New Year! We know many of our families are celebrating the Lunar New year at the moment and we are celebrating this also at Bayview School. On Tuesday and Wednesday we had some Chinese martial arts instructors come in to teach our classes some basic moves. The children had a lot of fun (as did the teachers).

Tomorrow (Friday) we are inviting all our learners to dress up in red and/or gold to celebrate the new year and at 10.15am we have a Chinese performance group coming in to share some new year celebration dances.

LONG BAY

We are still gutted that we didn’t get to go to Long Bay last week. The weather forecast was not in our favour with a weather watch in place, and the health and safety of your children always comes first. Thank you for pivoting on Friday. Your children still had a creative day.

A huge thank you to PJ from Harcourts Cooper and Co who still turned up to help cook the BBQ and who provided some apples and water for the children. PJ is a long time friend of Bayview School who always supports what we are trying to achieve with our learners.

Sadly we are not able to reschedule the trip to Long Bay so we will all have to wait until 2027!

LOST PROPERTY

If your child has lost an item at school you are free to check our new lost property area under the walkway by the COLA. Naming your child’s items helps us return them quickly.

ROAD SAFETY

I have noticed some great role modelling by parents who use our pedestrian crossing correctly with their children. Sadly I have also noticed some unsafe behaviour with parents crossing their children down by the fales, children running across the road to their parents, children being delivered on the back of a motorbike not wearing a helmet, children in cars sharing the front seat not in a booster seat. We also have some parents who are forcing their way into the lower carpark with intimidating behaviour. The best behaviour was seen on the day an Auckland Transport Officer was monitoring parking! It takes all of us to keep every child safe around Bayview School. Please drive safely, please act safely.

PERFORMING ARTS

At Bayview School we  know that our learners are diverse and have different passions and interests. This year we have created a special position as Leader of Performing Arts which Elleen Davids has taken on. This is to provide opportunities in the performing arts for learners to shine and thrive. This includes events such as Showquest, Toi, Kapa Haka, Choir, etc. We are investigating having our own Toi (wearable arts) event this year. We are also the organising school for the Kaipatiki Matariki Festival this year. It is going to be an exciting year.

EXTRACURRICULAR SPORTS 2026

This year Hayley Roberts has taken on the responsibility for organising our extra-curricular sports. Thank you in advance for supporting her in this complex role. Hayley will send messages out on Seesaw and through this newsletter when she is able to.

SPORTS

Basketball registrations are still open until Wednesday 25th February.  Please get your registrations in as they will not be accepted after this date.  In order for our teams to be successful we need you! At the moment we do not have enough coaches or managers.  We would love to have some more people step up and take on these roles.  Please email Hayley Roberts [email protected] if you would like more information.

SCHOOL POLICIES:

School policies are the responsibility of the Bayview School Board. We use School Docs for our school policies as they are regularly reviewed by experts to ensure they comply with current legislation. There is a 3 year cycle for review and each term School Docs indicate which policies are due for review. Under each policy sits procedures around how the school enacts the policy. These are the responsibility of the Principal and Leadership team.

Policies can be found at: www.schooldocs.co.nz

(Username: Bayview  Password: icare)

The Term One Review is now open. This term we are reviewing some of the policies in the Safety On and Off School Grounds section. For more information go to the school docs website, find the ‘Current Review’ tab at the top of the SchoolDocs site.

Here is a summary of the current reviews:

  • Alcohol, Drugs, and other harmful substances policy
  • Sun Protection
  • Digital Technology and Online Safety
  • Cellphones and Other Personal Digital Devices

Parents are also able to provide feedback on any policies currently being reviewed. To do so click on the ‘Start your Review’ button.

You can find instructions on how to submit reviews by going to the ‘Reviews’ tab on our schools dashboard and look for ‘Instructions for reviewers’.
