BOOK FAIR 2025

We have had a very successful book fair this year selling $7072.75 worth of books and stationery. From this the school receives $2392.46 worth of reward points which we use to purchase more books for our library! Thank you so much Team Bayview. Hopefully your children are enjoying the books they purchased.

CLASSROOM RELEASE TIME

From the start of 2025 all primary teachers in Aotearoa, New Zealand were allocated with the equivalent of 5 days release per term, a total of 20 days over a school year. Classroom release time at Bayview School is used for assessing learners with their learning, observing best practice in other habitats either at Bayview or other schools, and also for completing admin tasks required of teachers. At Bayview our staff decided that this release would be issued as a full day instead of part of a day more regularly. We felt this was less disruptive for our learners. Alongside the CRT our leaders within the kahui ako are also allocated release time to fulfil their leadership responsibilities. Other leaders of curriculum also get release to help drive the curriculum changes we are currently moving through. All of this is over and above the CRT.

We know it may seem that your child’s teacher is out of class a lot but this is a legal requirement that schools must provide. We are lucky at Bayview that we have some amazing relievers who give their time and energy to Bayview School. Change for some learners can be difficult to deal with but we do our best to ensure classes are set up to work with the change in teacher.

SPORTS

We are incredibly lucky to have so many extracurricular sports opportunities available for our learners to participate in. This is very capably led by the amazing Katrina Cray. We are fortunate to have a range of parents, past pupils and friends of Bayview School volunteer to coach and manage teams. Anyone coaching a team must be police checked under the Vulnerable Children’s Act 2014.

Recently we have had some incidents involving poor conduct from our players and/or parents during games. This has happened across a range of sports. We respectfully remind parents that at primary level we encourage children to try a range of different sports so they can make informed decisions about sports they wish to pursue as they move through their schooling. At primary level our focus is on learning the basic skills, showing sportspersonship, learning how to lose, learning how to win, dealing with disappointment, but most importantly playing for fun. We know watching a game can be exciting, especially when it is a close game. Parents please remember you are being the role models on how our children react to winning or losing. Our expectations are that our players will play fairly and will handle any decisions given by the referee of the game. Thank you for your support in reinforcing these messages. Please feel free to email me with any positive messages about how games have gone and how proud you are of our players conduct and sportspersonship! I love getting those messages!

STUDENT LEADERS

Bayview School has organised and will be running a conference for student leaders across our kahui ako. On July the 24th 130 student leaders will be coming to Bayview School to be part of this amazing event. Our wonderful Alyssa Farrow has organised and will be running the day! She has lined up a range of guest speakers and workshop facilitators to work with these leaders including one of our ex pupils who now plays top level hockey! We also have an ex Breakers player and two amazing education leaders. Thai is going to be an amazing event and will be so beneficial to our school leaders to build their leadership skills!

PEER MEDIATORS:

Did you know we have trained peer mediators at Bayview School? Every day we have learners that give up their break times to go out in the playground at break times to support children and sort out any problems they have. These mediators have been trained by our PC4L leaders in the school, Mr Hinton and Mrs Pearce. The mediators are very dedicated and always go out on duty even if it is raining. The questions they use are the five magic questions. I have put these at the end of the newsletter so you can use the same language at home.

ATTENDANCE

Our attendance rate for the year is sitting at 92%. That is awesome! Thank you so much for ensuring your child attends school regularly.

For the rest of this term we will be having a focus on lateness. We have two bells in the morning, one at 8.55am which indicates all learners should be in class ready to start the day. The next bell is at 9am which indicates the beginning of learning.

All our learners should be at school and in their classes by 8.55am ready to start their day at 9am.
