PRODUCTION 2025

This year, we will fully immerse ourselves again in a whole school production. It is the story of a group of Bayview children who discover a taniwha living in the Oruamo awa who shares with them the history of the area. The concept of kaitiaki is explored as we look at the impact of humans on the environment and how collectively (Kotahitanga) we can ensure the continued health of our environment.

This week, we have asked our Year 5 and 6 learners who might be interested in auditioning for a main part. These prospective actors have been given a script so they can decide which part they would like to audition for and some time to learn lines. Auditions are during the week of 9-13th June.

As with all our school productions, we get every child involved. Classes choose a scene they would like to be part of and may be involved in a dance or dramatic sequence!

The dates for performances are Tuesday 16th September, Wednesday 17th September and Thursday 18th September. Please mark these dates in your diary as your child will need to be at school each night to perform!

We will be sending out more information to keep you informed about this amazing event.

SHOWQUEST & TOI

Thank you to everyone who is involved with our showquest and toi entries for 2025. Mrs Davids is overseeing this with help from Ms McGuire and a range of parents. This group is currently rehearsing and creating ready for show night on the 17th June (Showquest) and 19th June (Toi)!

BOOK FAIR 2025

Thank you for supporting our annual bookfair. A special thank you to the parents who have given up their time to help sell books either before or after school. We do receive reward money from the sale of books and goods, so every purchase you make helps your child with their reading journey and also helps the school purchase more books for our library. It’s a win-win!

RAFFLE

Congratulations to everyone who won a prize in our raffle!

Another huge thank you to Anne Crooks for giving us her time and energy to organise and run the raffle. Anne, you are such a great friend of Bayview School!

EXPO

Thank you to everyone who was able to come along to our expo yesterday! We hope you found it useful.

TEACHER ONLY DAY FRIDAY 30th MAY

– school will be closed. Please note this is one of the mathematics teacher-only days where most of the schools across our Kahui Ako attend. Thank you for your support around this (PS this is the Friday before the King’s birthday holiday so you have a long weekend!)

STUDENT LEADERS

Our student leaders have been doing an incredible job making a positive impact around the school and in our wider community. From helping with the upkeep of our school environment to ensuring student birthdays are celebrated and shared in the foyer for all to see, their mahi has not gone unnoticed! Some of our leaders proudly represented our school at the recent ANZAC Day parade, showing respect and leadership in our local community. Most recently, they met with the Kaipātiki student panel, offering thoughtful student perspectives on community safety. We’re so proud of their initiative, dedication, and commitment to making a difference.

ATTENDANCE

You will be aware the current government has a focus on ensuring learners attend school regularly. In today’s budget they are announcing an investment in a more effective attendance service. We will unwrap this more as more information comes from the Ministry of Education.

This is a recent piece of correspondence from the MOE:

The Government has recently announced an investment of almost $140 million over the next four years to improve student attendance. This includes $123 million for the delivery of a new attendance service and almost $17 million to support and strengthen front-line attendance services.

New front-line attendance services will include comprehensive local attendance services funded to reach double the current number of chronically absent and non-enrolled students, and an option of some in-school provision for schools with very high numbers of chronically absent students. The new services will be in place by early 2026.

Some changes have been made to attendance service catchment areas so that they are big enough to be viable and small enough to be local.

Referral to the new attendance services will be a core part of the support available for students who have reached chronic levels of absence (the red ‘serious concern’ threshold category in the Stepped Attendance Response, or STAR).

I have attached our attendance procedures at the end of this newsletter for your information.

Here are some attendance percentages so far in term 2:

Girls – 71%

Boys – 75%

Year 4’s have the highest percentage at 78%

It is the time of year when winter illnesses are starting to occur. The Ministry of Health has some great information that can help you decide if your child should attend school or not.

By using School Docs we ensure our policies are up to date with any changes in legislation or law and that these are reviewed regularly over a 3-year cycle. Policies are owned by the Board but you are able to have a say as well. If you are interested in submitting ideas and opinions reviewing any of our policies, you are able to do this through our school docs site. The current policies that require review are:

To start reviewing, click on a topic name below, then click the Start your review button. If a link is inactive, our school doesn’t have the topic.

In term 2 we are reviewing policies in the Health, Safety, and Welfare Policy section.

Please note your suggestions may be taken into consideration by School docs staff but may not be included in potential changes. All schools across NZ who use school docs will also be reviewing these documents.

Attendance Procedures

Rationale

School leadership, boards, parents and the Ministry of Education all play key roles in supporting students to attend school – and addressing absence when it occurs. Lifting school attendance is our shared responsibility.

Every child has the right to an education.

Purposes:

To ensure:

  • Every child is present at school to receive the best education.

Guidelines:

  • Bayview School uses electronic registers and it is the teachers’ responsibility to ensure accurate attendance records are kept.
  • Teachers must mark their register by 9.10am each morning and by 1.40pm each afternoon.
  • If a teacher is absent a paper copy of the register will be given to the reliever to fill out. The office will then transpose this data on to eTAP in both the morning and afternoon.
  • The MOE will automatically upload attendance data every day from the school SMS.
  • Attendance is checked by the office each morning at 9.10am.
  • Office staff will contact the homes of any unexplained absentees, and record reasons given.
  • If a parent contacts a teacher via Seesaw please ask that parent to complete an absence form from our website or to phone the office.
  • If a child arrives at school late, they must inform the office by going there first.
  • If a child’s attendance becomes a concern, teachers should inform their Professional Learning Group Leader. Contact should be made with Parents/Caregivers as early as possible.  Major concerns should be referred to the Deputy Principal.
  • Unsatisfactory attendance = 5 days absence in one term or 10 days absence over a year.
  • Recording student attendance is a legal requirement, and as such must be accurate, and kept up to date as this information may be requested by the court.

Stepped Attendance Response – STAR Responding to all absences

The Stepped Attendance Response (STAR) sets expectations for school, student, parent/guardian, Ministry of Education and broader system responses to student absence. It provides a series of activities that should be considered when students meet absence thresholds. The actions taken will be tailored to the reasons for absence, for example a student with a chronic illness will require tailored supports for their education. The activities include considering prosecution for absences if appropriate support is offered and not taken up.

Schools:

• Assess attendance history of new students and share attendance history when students move between schools.

• Survey students and parents to support effective teaching practice and engagement

• School Leadership and Boards actively minimise disruptions to the school day and week e.g. use callback days, parent-teacher meetings held after school

• Support students to continue learning if unable to attend school every day, including using Ministry-approved well-being or transitional plans, or health schools where appropriate.
